What is Medicare Part A?

Medicare Part A covers inpatient care in hospitals, critical access hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities (excluding custodial or long-term care). It also provides coverage for hospice care and some home health services.

To qualify, you must have earned specific work credits throughout your lifetime. For those with at least 10 years (40 credits) of earned wages, Medicare Part A is free. Generally, individuals with free Part A coverage cannot opt out. However, if you have fewer work credits, you may be required to pay a premium and have the option to opt out of Part A coverage.
